            Abstract :
This work describes a versatile magnetometer which allows the simultaneous measurement of surface and bulk magnetisation in thin film samples. An optical beam bounce system is employed to detect the amplitude of oscillation of a thin film sample cemented to the end of a resonant tungsten or quartz fibre. The detection technique also allows a simultaneous measurement to be made of the longitudinal Kerr effect. The instrument is less prone to thermal drift than a conventional AGFM using piezo-electric sensing and also allows the measurement of the magnetic moment in two orthogonal directions
