Abstract
The authors consider in some detail how the prospects of the United Automated Telecommunications Network (UATN) development in the Soviet Union conform to possibilities offered by fiber optic facilities today. They identify the main questions that have arisen in connection with the development of fiber optic facilities. The proposed architecture of the future telecommunication system is outlined. Some conclusions drawn from model studies of 565 Mb/s and 2.4 Gb/s transmission systems are presented.<>
