    This inaugural article of the AI and Sustainability department sets the stage for articles in the area over the coming months and years. AI and sustainability is a nascent area, and elaborating it´s brief history with pointers to recent and notable activities is this article´s primary goal, as well as contextualizing AI and sustainability within the larger computing and sustainability movement.
