What is an appropriate curriculum for graduate study in instrumentation?

EARLIER this year I received a very interesting letter from a graduate student at the University of Toronto. He raised a challenging question which I attempted to answer with the help of a few colleagues. The question is “What is an appropriate curriculum for graduate study in instrumentation?” This is a serious question deserving of more than a casual answer by me and a few associates.
