Abstract :
The expression for the scattering cross-section derived by Batchelor has been integrated over the useful scattering volume for transmitting and receiving aerials aligned on a great-circle path, and formulae have been derived for the transmission loss. The application of the theory to experimental results at 86, 3000 and 10000 Mc/s suggests that mean-square variations of refractive index of the atmosphere may be independent of height up to about 2200 ft and may then vary with the inverse square of height.
