Abstract
An increasing number of companies are getting involved in work on knowledge-based systems. Knowledge engineering requires a variety of skills drawing on a number of different disciplines, and there is concern in industry about the sources and training of knowledge engineers. The article gives practical advice by describing real problems, discussing the characteristics needed of knowledge engineers, and suggesting some ways forward
