Abstract :
Although the general principle and structure of the power system stabiliser (PSS) for supplementary control have long been established, the best siting of, and choice of the parameters in, the PSS call for much design ingenuity and effort when used in multimachine systems. Reported in the paper is the experience obtained of PSS optimisation through the extensive application and development of techniques of modal and eigenvalue-sensitivity analyses. Simultaneous consideration is given to damping both the inter-area mode and the local mode in the optimisation strategy. A fresh look at the basis for selecting the lead/lag compensation stages is also described
