Abstract :
The author describes a few of the CEGB´s achievements in the field of operating and maintaining large coal-fired power stations. The CEGB has developed and refined a highly sophisticated and effective system of operating and managing its power stations. Many aspects of power-station management are common to all types of energy source. Those specifically relating to coal firing are particularly concerned with: safety and wear aspects in dealing with a potentially explosive medium, the reception of coal into the site, the management of fuel stocks, the effective combustion of the fuel, and the disposal of waste products. The overall management of efficient power plants demands contributions from numerous areas other than pure engineering, including system economics, computing, management services and training
