Abstract :
The linear theory of a plasma loaded helix type traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) is considered. The role of plasma on the gain and the degree of concentration of the high frequency fields in the region of the plasma is studied. Strong gain enhancements are observed for frequencies in which hybrid plasma-slow waves are formed. Use of plasma allows for strong interaction even if the beam is displaced from the immediate vicinity of the structure. This latter effect could allow for the development of higher power amplifiers with larger cross-sectional areas
