Abstract :
Expressions derived for the electric field in a sphere-gap have hitherto been confined to the points of maximum field intensity in connection with studies of gaseous breakdown. More recently, work on the electrical properties of liquids has required a knowledge of the distribution of the field over the surfaces of the spheres. In the paper, expressions are derived for this distribution. Further, it is shown that similar though more complicated expressions exist for radial and axial components of the field at any point of the gap. Tables of the distribution over the surfaces of the spheres are given for several gap/diameter ratios.
