Abstract
The paper deals with the experimental development of direction-finders carried out at H.M. Signal School, Portsmouth. A general treatment is given of the field of a wireless wave in the vicinity of a ship. It is shown that both semicircular and quadrantal correctors will generally be required to obtain readings of high precision and to correct a direction-finder for deviations due to the ship. Typical forms of quadrantal and semicircular correctors are described and their relative advantages indicated. The principles underlying a new form of sense-finder are explained. The best position for a direction-finder in a ship is discussed and the results of measurements made in one of H.M. ships are given.
