Abstract :
To enable the complex behaviour of a mill to be readily simulated, linear relations are employed which are true for small changes only. These linear perturbation equations are given, and the procedure by which the constants in the equations were determined for an actual mill is described. Simple relationships between these constants are derived from rolling theory. A sample set of coefficients is discussed using these relationships. The simulation block diagram is given and it is shown how the dynamic behaviour of the screw controls, and of the stand motors, is introduced. A realistic simulation is obtained using a tape recorder to feed in input-gauge profiles similar to those arising in practice. Investigations on a range of automatic gauge-control systems are described. Each system is assessed in terms of an `off-gauge¿ figure.
