Abstract :
The paper describes a part of the power supply for the orbital magnet of the 7GeV proton synchrotron Nimrod. This machine is the first large accelerating device of the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory at the National Institute for the Research in Nuclear Science, Harwell. A description is given of (a) the operational requirements of the power supply and its design, with particular reference to voltage regulators, to achieve repeatability of pulses, (b) the shaft system, which must withstand the stresses occurring under normal pulsing and during faults, and (c) the overall design of the set to limit the fluctuations of power taken from the Grid.
