Design and construction of the cross-channel d.c. interconnector

The paper relates the circumstances under which the cross-Channel interconnector was changed from alternating to direct current. It discusses the method of connection into the systems in both countries and the layout of the terminal equipment. Design features are discussed, together with problems which arose in its construction, in laying the cable and in the operation of the link since it was put into commercial service on 8th December 1961; at that time it was the largest installation of its type in the world.
