  • Abstract
The response of a coaxial shunt is derived for several important forms of current variation. Both steady-state and transient components of the response are given in the form of nondimensional graphs. The paper thus extends the work of Park,1 who gave a rigorous treatment for the steady-state sinusoidal response. The mathematical process is described in the Appendix and is applicable to any form of input. The only approximation made is in neglecting one term of the differential equation, assuming that the resistance tube is thin enough for its curvature to be neglected. This will probably always be true in a practical shunt. A new approach to the problem of reducing response time is given. The method does not involve modification of the simple geometry of the device, and the response is still accurately calculable. Results of tests on a modified shunt confirm the improvement in response, which has been calculated and presented graphically with the response curves of the normal tubular shunt. An RC analogue used for checking calculations and for preliminary study is described in the Appendix.
