  • Abstract
The purpose of a winder is to cut the paper arriving from a paper machine into strips of specific width and wind it into a roll of definite diameter. Practical experience in the production of newsprint has shown that the maximum operating speed of a winder must be approximately 2-2.5 times the operating speed of the paper machine. In December 1994 and March 1995, the first complete regenerative AC winder drive systems in Canada and North America using insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) synchronous rectifiers were installed on two paper machine winders at Rainy River Forest Products in Kenora, Ontario. The author describes the synchronous rectifier, power flow, transformer sizing, power dip ride-through, and AC drives sizing
