Abstract :
A new method of measuring the transfer function in a magnetic recording channel using FFT analysis has been developed. Based on the transfer function, we have made a practical equalizer with simple RC (Resistor-Capacitor) circuits to equalize a reproduced signal in a perpendicular magnetic recording channel with ring heads into a waveform that satisfies Nyquist´s first criterion. Applying the equalizer to an experimental perpendicular VCR, we have successfully demonstrated a VCR with a byte error rate of 1×10-5 and a recording bit area of 0.9 μm2/bit
