Abstract :
The implementation of WAM and ADS-B in Europe is evolving with an impressive growth rate. More than 700 ground stations are currently deployed or planned for deployment at various sites in Europe, based on existing contracts or firm commitments by the ANSPs. Several thousands of aircraft are already compliant for ADS-B in Non-Radar Airspace whilst several hundreds of aircraft are compliant with the requirements of ADS-B in Radar Airspace. The Implementing Rule on Surveillance performance and interoperability (EU Regulation 1207/2011), which originally foresaw forward-fit and retrofit dates in Jan 2015 and Dec 2017 respectively, is currently considered for amendment, including shift of these dates. The Rule enables the widespread aircraft equipage for ADS-B in Radar Airspace and other applications, thus accelerating the implementation of ADS-B in Europe. Moreover, Airborne Traffic Situational Awareness (ATSAW) is operational in Europe since February 2012 and more than 15000 flights of ATSAW equipped revenue aircraft have been performed. The significant progress achieved so far provides the means for modernisation, rationalisation and interoperability of Surveillance infrastructure. It will enable significant benefits for the ATM Network and establish the baseline for deployment of the future more demanding ADS-B applications (spacing, separation etc.).
