Abstract :
Various millimetre-wave generation techniques utilising semiconductor laser sources are considered. A comparative study highlights issues such as cost and experimental complexity, millimetre-wave signal quality (phase noise and stability), millimetre-wave signal power and signal tunability. Optical millimetre-wave generation techniques are categorised into systems using dual-semiconductor-laser sources, semiconductor-laser sources and dual-mode semiconductor laser sources. Within the dual-mode laser category a novel device structure for generating millimetre-wave signals in the 60 GHz region is proposed and simulation results are presented
