Abstract :
The review covers the significant developments during recent years in the mercantile-marine radio-communication services. It covers, in some detail, the changes in design techniques and the improved standards of performance realised by modern equipments. The great advances made in equipment design, e.g. the high standards of frequency stability in modern transmitters and receivers used for s.s.b. radio-telephony, are outlined, and the review stresses the fuller realisation of the advantages of s.s.b. operation which such high standards of frequency stability make possible. Other technical developments outlined include the progress made in integrating into a comprehensively planned installation the many radio services sometimes provided by separate units.
