Abstract :
State-of-the-art cryogenic receivers and other technologies are being custom-developed for ALMA: a vast millimetre/submillimetre radio telescope that will probe distant galaxies. An astronomical observatory that will detect signals and image regions of space within and outside our galaxy with more clarity than has previously been possible is being constructed through an international collaboration between Europe, North America and East Asia. In this issue, a participating team from the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK have presented their latest research towards realising the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre array (ALMA) which is due for completion in 2012.
