The calculus of nonuniformly spaced variables

IN the conventional calculus of finite differences the n sets of k independent variables x^a (1), x^a (2) …. x^a (k) are assumed uniformly spaced along each of the k axes of a rectangular frame. Occasionally nonuniform spacings are also assumed, but only along one dimension.
