Abstract
The growing complexity of printed-circuit boards (PCBs) and the concomitant need for computer-aided design (CAD) systems are examined. The features required of CAD systems and how they are used are described. The need for a standard translation mechanism to let the products of one hardware or software supplier substitute directly for those of another is noted. Future trends are identified.<>
