Abstract :
The paper discusses the application of pole shifting and optimal-control theories to the design of feedback controllers for a fifth-order linearised model of a synchronous generator. The pole-shifting method used covers both the state and output-feedback cases. The optimal-control method described enables the designer to specify a suitable performance index which results in an optimal system with a desirable response. The pole shifting and the optimal controllers designed for the synchronous generator are shown to make an appreciable improvement in the dynamic response of the generator.
