Abstract :
The apparent similarity of optimal power flow (OPF) and conventional power flow (e.g., familiar busbar data and circuit flow output) is an illusion that may lure a new user into using OPF unprepared without realizing the real implications of the OPF analysis being undertaken. This letter discusses the challenges of using an OPF program from the perspective of a new user. The difficulties and burdens that an OPF places on a user are outlined. The pitfalls in using an OPF that a user needs to watch out for are discussed. These may also serve as useful reminders to the experienced OPF users
