Abstract :
An increase in the effective diameter of an optical fibre when helically twisted is reported. The increase displaces fibres in close packed helically twisted arrays from their ideal lattice positions. From simple geometric arguments an expression for the increase is derived and improved close-packing is achieved by making fibre size corrections
