Abstract :
A discussion is presented of the work of George Cecil Jaffe, who carried out a series of experimental studies which were devoted to the investigation of the natural and the radiation-induced conductivity of n-hexane, a liquid hydrocarbon. He used the radiation emitted from a radium source and measured the increase in conductivity, charge carrier mobilities, and recombination coefficients. In 1913 he published his famous paper `Zur Theorie der Ionisation in Kolonnen´ (theory of columnar ionization) which was to become a classic. He treated the problem of recombination of charge carriers which were produced in close spatial correlation
