The output and optimum design of permanent magnets subjected to demagnetizing forces

Faus (General Electric Company, Lynn, Mass.): A fundamental reason for the difficulty of making accurate calculations of the performance of permanent magnets is that the effect of magnetic leakage is so difficult to estimate. In the case of magnets of irregular shape adjacent to iron, accurate calculations are almost impossible. The problem is analogous to that of an electrical circuit comprising metallic conductors immersed in salt water.
