Abstract :
A method is described for estimating the critical clearing time for a single-machine infinite-busbar power system where the generator is fitted with a saturable voltage regulator. The method is similar to Lyapunov´s direct method, in that integration of the postfault swing equations is dispensed with. Instead an estimate is made of the extent of the region of stability in the state space. The procedure involves calculation of the unstable singular point and an eigenvalue analysis of the linearised system matrix evaluated at this point. There are advantages compared with Lyapunov´s method, using the usual Lyapunov function, since line conductances, transient saliency and the presence of a saturable exciter can be taken into account easily.
