Abstract :
Small children share a play area, entertained while their parents sit and chat nearby. If a little one starts crying, another toddler gives out a howl. Before the vigilant adults can reach their children, the kids are all sobbing in a terrified, breathless way. Their fear and uncertainty are obvious. While the cause is a mystery, the behavior of the young and old emerges as a group response to the sound signaling initiated by a frightened child.
