Abstract
The scrapping of plans to build the £30bn Severn Estuary barrage in October last year were a problem for the UK. The decision followed decades of debate on the impact on biodiversity and wildlife, flood management, local geology and water quality. Such environmental issues, coupled with a dwindling number of suitable sites, are duplicated across Europe. The result is a revival in interest in small-scale hydroelectric schemes.
