Abstract :
The 2012 Ernest K. Smith USNC-URSI Student Prize Paper Competition was held January 5, 2012, in Boulder, Colorado. The first prize was won by Matthew J. Burfeindt (Figure 1) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his paper with Susan C. Hagness and Barry D. Van Veen, “Beamforming-Enhanced Inverse Scattering for Microwave Breast Imaging,” a paper from Commission K. The second prize went to Timothy Brockett (Figure 2) of the University of California, Los Angeles for his paper with Harish Rajagopalan and Yahya Rahmat-Samii, “A New Paradigm in Solar Energy Harvesting: Characterization of High Absorption Nanopillar Array Photovoltaics, a paper from Commission B. The third prize was awarded to Pai-Yen Chen (Figure 3) of the University of Texas at Austin for his paper with Andrea Alù, “Ultra-Broadband Mantle Cloak Using Non-Foster Negative-Impedance Metasurfaces, a paper from Commission B. A group photo of the winners and organizers of the contest is shown in Figure 4.
