Abstract :
The traditional method of introducing wave mechanics to undergraduates is via the Schrodinger equation. This subject appears in a new light when the wave equation is avoided, and all the important results can be derived without using the Schrodinger equation. This approach gains simplicity and insight at the ultimate expense of generality. Examples, including a simplified treatment of Zener diodes, are given.
