Abstract :
We identify new methods for the roll-to-roll production of flexible color filter arrays (CFA) for electronic displays. Through the use of imprint lithography to define “color wells” we have enabled inkjet deposition as a means to generate CFAs, despite the modest precision attainable with liquid drop placement. In this paper, we outline the imprint lithography process and color well design for template production. The advantage of printing the filter array within a predetermined template is demonstrated, and analysis of their structure and optical properties is presented. CFAs, produced by this technique, provide one means to realize color reflective displays. Application of filters produced by the new process to a 3.8´´ color VGA (120 micron sub pixel pitch) E-ink based display platform is discussed.
