Abstract
Driven by competitive pressures, new technology and changes in the production process, the electronics industry is finding it necessary to move to strict statistical quality control techniques and to build up fault databases for long-term analyses. The volume of data required for this cannot be managed without the use of computer-based systems. One company involved in the telecommunications industry has successfully implemented such a solution with considerable benefits. The author discusses the provision of closed-loop control of the production of assembled printed circuit boards at Plessey
