Abstract :
It is shown that an array, in which the element outputs are multiplied together in pairs and the smoothed products are added, has a directional pattern independent of whether or not the various pairs are collinear. This property may be useful in sonar and radar systems in easing the physical requirements of an array. In particular, two circular scanning arrays are proposed, and their directional performance is compared with that of the corresponding additive array.
