The author arrives at the following points: Establish yourself as their coach; Craft specific work experiences designed to grow their skills; Work with them to improve their performance when they fail; Organize these experiences in a series of steps so that they can gradually, but steadily, move into management; Finally, remain vigilant, looking for every opportunity to coach, for it is through coaching, not general platitudes, that we grow effective managers and leaders
