Abstract :
It is suggested that an entirely new approach to engineering education is required. First, the introductory courses (calculus, physics, and chemistry), known as ´gatekeeper´ courses because they turn students off, need to be avoided. Second, engineering should be taught up front in the freshman year, and the professional course that should be taught first is design. The design courses should take minimum use of calculus of physics; when such material is needed, it should be offered on a just-in-time basis.<>
