Abstract :
In this paper, we derive a new set of prediction equations for the block smoothing method of JPEG for reduction of blocking artifacts. We also devise some simple metrics to measure the effects of edging and ringing artifacts. Experiments show that at the bit rate of 0.3 b/p or less, images reconstructed using the proposed equations have significantly fewer number of artifacts compared to the images reproduced using the original set of equations
