Abstract :
The paper considers the performance required from a parametric amplifier. Choice of varactor diode and pump frequency and the necessity to keep circuit losses to a minimum are discussed. A practical amplifier is described in detail including frequency tuning, variation of gain with temperature and power saturation. The expected noise figure was 1 dB and this was confirmed in practice. A method of increasing bandwidth by cascading two amplifiers is given.
