Abstract
The author examines the primary and secondary educational system, focusing on its failure to teach arithmetic, reading, and writing adequately or to prepare students for college. He attributes this situation to an undemanding attitude that prevails in society in general, and with parents in particular, with regard to education and achievement. He then considers what can be done, suggesting that even if we cannot soon correct the problem, we can address the symptoms.<>
