  • Abstract
The measured spectroscopic properties of Pr/sup 3+/-doped into sulfide and fluoride hosts are used to model the gain efficiency of a 1300-nm Pr-doped fiber amplifier. It is found that excited-state absorption from the long-lived /sup 3/H/sub 5/ level in Pr/sup 3+/-doped sulfide glass causes a significant degradation in performance, especially at wavelengths shorter than 1320 nm, Pr/sup 3+/-doped fluoride glass does not suffer significantly from this effect, although the maximum gain is smaller in the fluoride glass.
