Abstract :
The author surveys data structures currently being used to represent the physical design of integrated circuits. They are evaluated in terms of storage requirements and processing costs. For developing a new generation of layout tools, these data structures must be reconsidered, in order to cope with the advances in new technologies. Therefore, the potentialities of these data structures in handling new layout requirements are investigated; for example, in representing computer-generated holograms for optical connection of VLSI
