Abstract
The maximum transmission distance as a function of the bit rate is determined for various modulation/demodulation schemes in multichannel coherent optical communications systems. In one-channel systems the transmission distance is limited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to about 400 km. In multichannel systems, with 10 GHz interchannel spacing, the transmission distance is limited by four-wave mixing (FWM) to about 250 km.
