Abstract
Recording domains in magnetooptical media were observed with a polarizing microscope. Regularly shaped domains were observed for transition-metal-rich compositions, whereas jagged domains were observed for rare-earth-rich compositions with compensation temperatures close to the Curie temperature. The results were interpreted by means of a force-balance model. The dependence of the domain size and shape on the external magnetic field is discussed
