Abstract
Turbo codes can be used to increase the performance of digital communication systems to approach the Shannon limit with perfect synchronisation. A BER of 10-4 below Eb/N0 =2dB can be obtained. The authors demonstrate how to use tentative decisions to perform carrier phase recovery when using convolutional turbo codes over a satellite channel at low SNR where classical systems fail
