Abstract :
With all the hype circulating around multimedia and its numerous offshoots: new media, digital media, interactive media, and so on, does anyone really know what this term means? In the quest for a broad definition of multimedia, including its evolutionary origins, the author defines the essential elements of multimedia: immersion, interdisciplinarity, hypermedia, interactivity, and narrativity, revealing the important confluence between the arts, human-machine interface and information technology
