Abstract :
A 107-kbpi (4210 bits/mm) data channel was constructed using an 840-Oe-coercivity super-VHS tape and an unshielded magnetoresistive (UMR) head having a track width of 16 μm and was used to explore the practical upper limits of areal storage density in magnetic recording. For a 16-μm track width record head in a system with no guard bands, such as a helical recording system, the areal density would be 170 Mb/in 2. A (1.7) code and compact spectrum write (CSR) equalization were used, and phase margins of 36% were achieved at an error rate of 10 -6. The very high linear density achieved is possible because the UMR head and CSR write equalization procedure a nearly flat noise floor at the detector in a differential channel
