Abstract :
Rapid advances in molecular biology are changing the way we think of ourselves. As the Human Genome Project moves forward, we will identify more of the estimated 100,000 genes that make up our genome. This information will help us understand, identify and eventually treat many genetic disorders and other diseases. A central challenge posed by these advances is that the technology to diagnose genetic conditions inevitably precedes the ability to intervene with treatments. The paper considers how genetic testing raises the issue of potential uses and misuses of information. It discusses some social concerns of genetic testing by employers and insurers.
