Abstract :
This paper deals with the design of an in-wheel permanent magnet synchronous motor. As the integration of the motor in a wheel is a hard task (motor must has high efficiency and total mass as low as possible), we investigate a method to obtain an optimal design of a surface mounted permanent magnet in-wheel motor for the propulsion of a small electric vehicle. Firstly, an analytical model of the machine was developed. Then this model is used to generate the program to design the machine according to the specifications: to minimizing the total mass and maximizing the machine efficiency.
